Tyler Perry’s Duplicity

A white police officer mistakenly shoots and kills a Black man twice while on duty. Tyler Perry’s Duplicity is built on this mistake. The incident is shown at the beginning of the film with an anti-racist perspective. The scene of the police shooting a Black man at the beginning of the film is terrifying. Watching this scene reminded me of the famous incident of May 25, 2020. On that day, a white police officer in Minnesota brutally killed a Black man named George Floyd by strangling him.

The video of this incident went viral, prompting people to protest for the police officer’s punishment, which slowly escalated into violent protests. Creating a film about such a sensitive topic is extremely difficult and risky. If the film is made simply by focusing on these events, it could become a documentary. We all know that Tyler Perry’s Duplicity is a commercial film on Prime Video. For any film to be successful, it needs to add elements of dramatic thriller and drama to attract more people.

To understand the core of Tyler Perry’s Duplicity, we first need to understand the main cast and their characters. This will make it much easier to explain the story. Kat Graham is the most popular actress in the film, who plays a lawyer named Marley Wells. Meagan Tandy is the second female lead in the film, whose name is Fela Blackburn. Fela is Meagan’s best friend. She works as an anchor at a news television station. Ron Reaco Lee also plays a police officer, and Tyler Lepley is Meagan’s boyfriend, who works as a private detective. Joshua Adeyeye (Rodney) is the film’s coordinator, and the story progresses after his death.

Tyler Perry’s Duplicity: Story Summary

The film begins in a gym class where all the protagonists are exercising and then leaving the gym to go home. Upon arriving home, everyone heads to their respective jobs. Fela Blackburn also arrives at her Newsroom and begins reporting the news live on television.

Her boyfriend, Rodney, wanders around an unfamiliar house. The neighbor sees him enter. Thinking he’s a burglar, she calls the police. As soon as two police officers receive this information, they arrive. The officers see a Black man approaching outside the house and ask him to raise his hands. However, Rodney can’t hear their voices because he’s listening to music on his headphones as he approaches them.

Rodney looks at the two officers and tries to take something out of his pants pocket. The police think he’s pulling out a gun, and one of the officers immediately fires two bullets into Rodney’s chest. Rodney falls unconscious from the gunshot, collapses on the ground, and the police notice he’s holding a cell phone. Rodney was only trying to take the phone out of his pants to stop the music playing in his headphones. Due to this police confusion, he dies.

Fela, as usual, uses the teleprompter in the news studio to narrate all the news to the viewers. Meanwhile, the incident involving Rodney, who was shot and killed by the police, comes to light. Seeing Rodney’s name and photo, she goes into shock because Rodney and Fela are husband and wife. Seeing the news of her husband’s death, she experiences immense pain. If something like this happens to anyone, it feels terrible, and people can only console the family members.

The public transforms Rodney’s death into racially motivated violence. People believe the white police officer deliberately shot and killed the black man. The public labels the white police officer as racist. This incident is broadcast from every news studio in the United States, and people begin protesting for the white police officer to be punished. These protests take a violent form due to certain social factors.

Fela decides to file a lawsuit against the Police Department and demand compensation. To do so, she asks her best friend Meagan to prepare the case. Meagan strongly supports her during this difficult time and agrees to help her friend. However, this incident isn’t a mistake: the police didn’t kill Rodney by accident. There are horrific plot twists behind this, and the story changes completely with this revelation. Up until this point, Fela was the protagonist, but from here on, Meagan takes the lead. The film moves forward with emotion, with a story that may surprise people.

Reasons to Watch Tyler Perry’s Duplicity

This film is an excellent crime thriller that captures the theme of racial discrimination between whites and blacks, which has existed for years. It takes some time to expand this serious theme on screen. However, after the twist, it changes completely. I can bet you can’t guess the plot of the final part by watching the first half of the film. For me, it was a truly amazing experience. You can spend time with this film. It takes a while to develop the plot, but it has a lot of suspense, thriller, and detective fiction.
