The Story of The Leopard (In Brief)

Don Fabrizio Salina is a king. Apart from Salina, he rules over several other regions. His eldest daughter is named Concetta Corbera. She falls in love with her maternal cousin, Tancredi Falconeri. Tancredi also loves Concetta, but he is highly ambitious about his future. He wants to secure a bright future for himself amid the changes happening in Italy. To achieve this, he joins the army fighting against the monarchy. His uncle, Don Fabrizio, is angered by this decision, as he himself is a ruling king.

As the war continues, many regional kings in Italy start surrendering and agree to a unification process, leading Italy towards a single rule. Now, the government is run by elected politicians instead of kings. Each year, Don Fabrizio would leave Salina to spend holidays at his other palace. But due to the war, he now needs permission from the army general to travel there. He no longer has the freedom to go as he pleases. Eventually, he receives the permit to visit his other palace, and during this time, Tancredi and Concetta grow even closer. They both want to get married.

However, upon reaching the second palace, Tancredi meets Angelica Sedara. He becomes captivated by Angelica’s beauty and immediately informs his uncle that he wants to marry her. Angelica Sedara’s father is Don Calogero, who was once a very poor man. However, he was extremely lucky and gradually became the wealthiest person in Sedara. Later, he ran for elections and became the Mayor.

Don Fabrizio despises Don Calogero because he disapproves of the way he became rich. Calogero amassed his wealth through illegal mining and selling precious metals. When Don Fabrizio learns that Tancredi wants to marry Calogero’s daughter, he immediately arranges their marriage. This leaves Concetta heartbroken, as she cannot marry the person she truly loves. Although Tancredi achieves great success in his career, he remains unhappy in his personal life.

During this series, Don Fabrizio discovers some hidden secrets about Angelica. At the same time, he faces severe hardships in his own life. The series concludes on a deeply emotional note.

Some Positive and Negative Aspects of The Leopard

Negative: Tancredi gets injured in one eye during the war, but when he marries Angelica, his injury suddenly disappears. This seems like a mistake from the director.

Positive: Since the story is set in an era of old kingdoms, the costume design is exceptionally well done. The love story is beautifully written, making the audience emotionally connected to Concetta’s sorrow.
