Seeing so much hatred among children, a wave of fear swept through British society, sparking riots that lasted for several days. The main reason for this destruction was the growing hatred among children. Director Philip Barantini based a television series on this incident, now available on Netflix under the name Adolescence. Netflix created this series inspired by the story of these disturbed children. This story is somewhat based on true events. I’ve seen all four episodes of this series, and now I’m going to review Adolescence.
Netflix’s Adolescence: Cast and Characters
In Netflix’s Adolescence, Owen Cooper plays the lead role. He portrays a 13-year-old suspect. In the series, his name is Jamie. In addition to Owen Cooper, Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters, and Christine Tremarco have also played important roles. Stephen Graham and Christine Tremarco portray Jamie’s parents, while Ashley Walters plays Detective Chief Inspector Bascombe.
Netflix’s Adolescence Review: Story Summary
The police arrive at Mr. Eddie Miller’s home in the middle of the night with their team. The scene is so intense that it’s hard to guess who they’ve come to arrest. Then, suddenly, they arrest Eddie Miller’s son, Jamie. The police take him to headquarters and, at the end of Episode 1, show him footage of the crime. In this video, Jamie is seen stabbing his schoolmate Katie six times, killing her.
Jamie’s father is devastated to see it, unable to believe his son could commit such a crime. Jamie continues to insist he did nothing wrong, but after watching the video, his parents’ perspective changes. The police investigate the case thoroughly but are unable to recover the murder weapon used in the crime. They also try to understand why a 13-year-old boy could become so violent.
Jamie’s lawyer suggests sending him to a psychiatric treatment center so he can avoid immediate punishment. There, psychiatrists attempt to analyze him to understand what triggered such aggression in a child. The investigation reveals that Katie had been stalking Jamie online for several days. This turns out to be the main motive behind Jamie’s horrendous crime. The series consists of four episodes, and in the last one, Jamie decides to confess to his crime.
Netflix’s Adolescence: Direction and Execution
After watching the entire Adolescence series, it’s clear that director Philip Barantini shot several scenes uncut. As a result, the series’ runtime has been unnecessarily lengthened, possibly just to lengthen the episodes. This story is based on a true incident that occurred in the United Kingdom a few months ago, in which children attacked each other with knives. The director used this Netflix series to educate parents on the growing problem of youth violence.
There may be some flaws in the production of this series, but since the subject matter is based on true events, I appreciate the effort. The director has raised serious questions about parenting. Parents should pay more attention to their children.
Adolescence on Netflix: Positive and Negative Aspects

If you’re a teenager and often get angry over minor issues, you should watch this series. Furthermore, all parents should watch it to improve their parenting.
